What do you remember about eating when you were growing up? I recently read a book, I won’t tell you the title, because I’m a bit embarrassed by the fact the I purchased it, by a mom who wants to make every woman in America a great stay at home mom and housewife. She dedicated a chapter to cooking (Get Back in the Kitchen, I believe it was called) and I really agreed with most of what she said…I have so many memories of food growing up… especially those favorite foods that mom or dad would make (Hamburger Surprise!) and looked forward to the whole family sitting at the table together, usually for the first time all day. Neither one of my parents was a gourmet cook, but that didn’t change anything. Jenny-O Turkey Roast, canned green beans, Near East Rice Pilaf…it didn’t matter that it wasn’t made from scratch. I would still prefer that any day over eating an organic, from-scratch meal, and sitting at the table by myself. We never ate alone, mom was not up doing chores or anything else that would divert her attention from us. You didn’t start to clean up until everyone finished eating. This is the way to live…Joe doesn’t come home early enough for all of 4 of us to be at the table each night, but that shouldn’t stop me. I don’t want to deprive the girls of something I remember so fondly.

I cannot eat canned food. I think I’m maybe a little spoiled: I grew up in Sardinia, a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, and when I was growing up we always made everything from scratch. Now they also consume more packaged foods, but not really canned veggies (except for plum tomatoes, to make sauce) or frozen meals. I think it’s just a different culture.
But I do agree that it’s not nearly as much fun to eat alone all the time!!
These days, I don’t eat canned either…but it’s just what I ate when growing up. So different…I must admit, if I have any veggies from a can, I do think they taste pretty good, but I know it’s because they are sooooo salty. Are you a good cook? Are your kids good eaters?
