I have completely forgotten how to dress nicely

by LZ on June 1, 2009

Before I had kids, I thought my wardrobe was great. Never fussy, but I thought I left the house looking respectable on most days. Why now, after 2 children, do I suddenly forget how to dress? It’s still only 2 steps, so why does pulling on sweats and a t-shirt feel so much easier than cute pants and nice shirt? My 25 year old self would kick my current self’s butt if she saw me leaving the house the way I do.

Just today, I had to go out and run an errand. Oh no! My t-shirt (actually J’s t-shirt that is too big for me) has a stain on it. So what do I do? Reach for something on my side of the closet that fits and looks cute? No way. I went in J’s t-shirt drawer and found one of his without a stain. Still too big, still too frumpy, and in the end, no easier than one of my own. And while I’m on the subject, why am I always wearing yoga pants, when, last time I checked, I don’t do yoga. I don’t even work out. Why do I even have sweat pants?

Certain things, I will not lose. My flips flops? No way – they are the only shoes I wear in the Summer. My Joe’s cropped jeans? I wear them almost every day, since I’m pretty sure I will never wear shorts again in my life. But when I shop for new things, I come home with a bunch of shirts that look like everything else I have. Since when do buttons or some sort of print make a shirt more difficult to wear? Not only am I dressing-illiterate, but I can’t shop anymore either.

My biggest fear is that we will be invited out. Anywhere. Last time I found myself out at a bar, I was wearing an oh-so-hip black cardigan sweater and checkered pants. Seriously. I don’t recall if I felt good leaving the house looking like my grandma, but I don’t think I cared at the time. I think I even made a joke about it, but am at the point where I can’t even laugh.

I wish I could be like a guinea pig on “What Not to Wear” and throw away everything that doesn’t fit or look good, but that would leave me fewer choices than I could count on one hand. Wearing the same thing every day? Almost as uncool as wearing spandex in public.

This post made me giggle outloud!!! My niece and nephew graduated from high school last week and my sister casually hinted that I should dress a little nicer than I usually do. I panicked!!! All I ever wear are t-shirts or tank tops and shorts or capris…and of course flip flops! I managed to dig out a nice shirt from ages ago and a nice pair of capris that didn’t have holes in them or stains!! But I felt so self-consicious…I definitely didn’t feel comfortable! As soon as I got home from the graduation, I threw off the clothes and put on my everyday comfy stuff!!!

These days it’s all about comfort…and there’s nothing wrong with that!

I always beg Brian to put me on What Not to Wear! Wouldn’t it be great to get a whole new wardrobe??? I just bought a bunch of new shirts online b/c I am so sick of my old clothes!

Missy, please! You are the one I look to when I want some sort of style advice. The makeover would be wasted on you. I don’t know anyone who looks as put together as you do!

Are we twins? Seriously, were we separated at birth? I am the same exact way! You would never know, what with all the fashion magazines and fashion blogs I read, that I love being in sweats and PJs all day. It’s so sad that when I wear jeans, I feel ‘fancy’! LOL! I’m slowly trying to wean myself off of the 24/7 sweats wearing. I don’t want to enjoy being a lazy dresser anymore! ;-)

I completely understand where you’re coming from! I had two kids in two years during my transition from college life to family life. I have no idea what to wear anymore! I don’t want to wear ‘old lady’ looking clothes but junior clothes just look silly. Sweats (pj pants) are for all ages, right?

Yes! I bought myself some new clothes this weekend, because of the same reason! It is so hard to dress up to go to the store, knowing you’ll get dirty anyway!

I could not have said it better myself. I have a closet full of nothing. Most often I find myself looking (and feeling) quite frumpy. My kids however, dressed to kill! I think I am lost! Thanks for the laugh.

I too have noticed that I have not dressed the best anymore. I desperately need new clothes. A friend of mine dresses so nice and she gets her stuff from the thrift stores but you would never know it.

I want to take off all this weight first. So i don’t have to go shopping again.

thanks for the reminder how we need to remember that even as Mommie’s we need to still dress nice. OH I know…easier said then done!
