Housework is Mean.

by LZ on August 13, 2009

I’m a pretty bad house cleaner. Not that I can’t do it, but I often don’t. Our shelves haven’t been dusted in a while, our refrigerator is growing its own food, and it usually takes a ‘funky’ smell to push me into certain chores…

One chore I hate above all others is mopping. I think there was a span of more than 6 months that our floors did not see a mop. I was ok with that. If something spilled, I wiped it up, if there was some sort of gummy substance, my Clorox wipes did the trick. Not today.

J and I are trying to eat a bit better, and we’re starting with breakfast. We’ve been trying to start most mornings with a fruit and yogurt smoothie. Yum! It really is a great way to start the day, providing you are skilled in proper blender usage. I, apparently, am not. No, it wasn’t the cap, it was the base. It wasn’t on tight enough and, thus, red, icy, juicy splatter found its way around my entire kitchen, leaving my walls and floor looking like the set of CSI. Time to break out the mop.

A few months ago, I bought the Wet Jet, thinking it seemed a bit cleaner and easier than a regular mop. It is. For about an hour…then the floors seem even dirtier…but that’s not the point.

I herded the girls out of the kitchen, wiped up the mess and started to mop. Abs tried to walk in to see what was going on, and I gave a loud “Freeze!” to keep her from walking on the wet floor. Not a good move on my part. It took her 20 minutes to calm down. M was comforting her by saying that “Mommy didn’t mean to be so scary. She just wanted you to be safe.” Nice. After I finished, I was putting the mop away and heard footsteps, thud and cry…Of course, Abs ran in the kitchen, then slid and fell on my newly cleaned floor.

She’s fine. I’m fine, and I now know that I shouldn’t mop, under any circumstances, lest I risk injuring my kids or hurting their feelings. Thank you, Swiffer, for confirming what I have believed for years!

So, you won’t be appalled by the state of my house. That is ver comforting. It has taken me over a day to get all of the kitchen floor entirely mopped.

No, I will not. If I can see a little bit of your floor, you are way ahead of me!

Exactly what I need! Going to check it out today. Freakin’ Swiffer turns the floors into a stickier dirtier mess as soon as the nice smell and fake clean appearance wear off…

I am the same way about the floors, either I just don’t feel like mopping after I just spent a 1/2 hour vacuuming or the boys run non-stop on my floor too when its wet. I just bought a Bissell steam mop and it cleans my floor in no time, no scrubbing & just uses plain water. The floor dries fast cause its steam and I think its killing some germs too!

What do you mean ‘vacuum?” What’s that? Totally unfamiliar term…

And I have to ask, did that ever happen when you used a mop? Maybe you should get the mop back. Seen the commercials? “Baby come back”…I totally love those commercials!

I hope you have a great day!

I too am a believer in not mopping, and this is a constant battle in my home, on which my husband and I take opposing sides. Thanks for further ammunition in the war against mopping!

I don’t mop often for that very same reason. I tell DH that he’s welcome to do it himself. My floors are still dirty.

I hate sweeping – more than the mopping. I also hate vacuuming, dusting, folding, putting away, laundry, and I could go on forever.

See? I KNEW there was a good reason to be a sucky housewife. Clearly, it makes you a better mom. Which means I’m a really, really good mom ;-)

You are not alone in your hatred of mopping! I think it’s because I have to go get the mop, go get the bucket, fill it all up, dump it all out and put everything away. Why can’t it just all be in one self-contained unit like a vacuum?
