Scrub a dub dub. I loathe the bath tub.
If there is one thing about caring for small children that I would trade in a heartbeat, it is bathing. I detest giving my girls a bath. Not just dislike, but I dread it. Bathing isn’t scary to me, I’m not nervous (except for the end of the bath where I worry I may drop one of the slippery kids), but I think it is just such a pain in the a$$. I didn’t like bathing them as infants, and I don’t like bathing them as they get older.
I’ve never been an every day bather. If they need one, they get one. Sunblock or bugspray that day? You get a bath. Fingernails are gross? Bath time. Been a couple of days since your last bath? Get in the tub. I’m actually glad I never got into the habit of bathing them daily as babies. I’ve heard horror stories of babies and toddlers that were so used to their bath, that they couldn’t sleep without one. Not the case here. You’re welcome, girls!
As M gets older, she has moved on to occasional showers. I love this. She can sit in the shower and play for ages. When Abs needs a bath, they do it together, and it’s not so bad. When M is in there by herself, it’s mayhem. The splashing, the flooded bathroom, the echoing songs. Oh, the echoing! I have never wanted her to stop singing as much as when she’s belting out songs in the bathroom. As unaccoustically pleasing as it gets. Did I mention the splashing? How many towels must I put on the floor to ensure that I never again (I say never again because it happened. The bruising lasted for weeks) fly up in the air, elbow the wall, then land on the same elbow as it slams into the tile floor at the same time as my left butt cheek. Luckily I was not holding Abs. Unluckily, my iPhone flew out of my hand and the glass screen cracked. Did I mention I hate baths?
One thing that I worry about with bathing is the inevitable crap in the tub. It’s bound to happen. With M, it took a year or so. With Abs, it hasn’t happened yet, but I am waiting. It never fails, though. As soon as she gets out of the tub and runs to her room, she pees on the floor. Lovely. Even more lovely? The time I waited too long to put on her diaper, and she pooped on her rug. I saw it coming in slow motion and couldn’t do anything about it. Yes, we laughed about it. M loves to tell the story. Still, it’s quite gross and a bit stressful to worry about it happening again. Getting out of the tub is a race against time with her.
Oh, and frequent bathing means I have to clean my tub more often. Reason # 1,234,987…

I do not ever want to have to clean up floating turds from the bath tub. Or anywhere where it shouldn’t be, for that matter. This is not an option. No. Nuh-uh. Never.
Honestly. Turding on the rug? Good Lord, I’m having heart palpitations…

THANK YOU! I hate bathtime too. The mess. the crying, the whining when it comes to hair washing time. We never did the every day thing either. Although with O it’s turned into a great distraction. These days it’s worth letting him bathe vs the whines but still… the mess does get to you. I so agree.

Oh I totally understand. I’m not a big fan of bath time either – never did the every day bathing. And I DREAD the day that anyone poops in the bath. I hope it never happens.

#1son is finally getting interested in showers. #2 son? Not so much. While I don’t loathe bathtime as much as you, it does seem to be an incredible time suck. And poop in the tub? Luckily, only 2 of my 3 kids had a floating Baby Ruth incident and I think I’m finally past that stage. Fingers crossed!

Wow! Never had the “poop in the tub” experience. My four year old is scared of hair, lint, soap and anything in the tub. When she was around 1 she freaked out over an eyelash. Since then, I bathe the girls standing up. It’s quick, leaves no rings, and gives me enough time to put them on a toilet, diaper, etc. Why not just put her on the toilet before and after bathtime? I’ ve done this w/ them straight out of the tub, dripping wet. Saved me lots of work.
btw…I feel your pain over the rug. We have wall to wall carpet.

Ooh. Poop in the tub? Had it happen once when my daughter Reese was a few months. I think I threw out the tub.
I can totally relate though. I hate bathing the kids so much I managed to get my husband to do it. EVERY NIGHT!
He gets home from work, I throw the kids over to him and he actually does it. They love it too, but it’s mostly to give me a little break.

I never did the everyday baths either, but both my kids had dry skin issues so it worked out. I hate the bath thing too – although we do tend to do the shower thing more often. My son only had a poop in the tub situation once, but he was really little (it was more diarrhea really – it was horrifying). My daughter hasn’t yet, although I have to put her on the toilet before she gets in, or she will pee the minute I take her out. She’s polite enough to walk over to the rug and stand on it before she pees, so that’s nice of her.

It’s such a chore, isn’t it. I am so glad that my 2 1/2 year old is into taking showers now. So much easier.
