Something else that shouldn’t be enjoyable. But, it is.

by LZ on October 19, 2009

Yesterday, I had an appointment, for a facial and massage, at a local spa with a friend that I don’t get to see often enough. The plans had been in the works for a few weeks, and I could not have been more excited. After a week of lousy sleep and colds in our house, I was so ready to get away for a few hours and just relax.

I got ready to leave…left myself some extra time to putter around once I got there, and then boom – a message from my friend that there was a marathon in town, and most of the roadways that I would take to the spa were blocked. Hmmm…I hope I’m not late, I thought. I left immediately. Every road that could take me over the bridge was blocked. I drove and drove, looked for every possible alternate route. No luck. To make matters worse, I drank a large coffee an hour earlier…No spa, no bathroom = no fun.

Long story short: I got to the spa – which is 7 miles from my house – an hour late. I completely missed my massage, but the woman doing my facial took pity on me and gave me an extra long neck and shoulder massage. Then I got to chat with my friend in the sauna while I took my time getting ready to go home.

But, you know what? The massage? The girls’ day out? That was great! The drive? It was ok. I was alone. I am never alone. So what if I was stuck in my car? So what if I felt like I was about to burst? Not one single little person was whining my name. I didn’t smell any stinky diapers. No one was demanding a snack. I felt more pity for the marathoners out in the snow than I did for myself…and that surprises me…because I REALLY wanted that massage. There’s always next time!

I enjoy every moment in my car alone. Listening to music that I like, or just driving in silence. And I could be going anywhere… as long as nobody calls me mommy.

It took my sister FOREVER to pick me up after my marathon because of the traffic. I ended up having to walk a mile to meet her after. Which was awesome, considering I’d just run 26.2 miles! A massage sounds like something for the top of the TO DO list for you now!

That sucks, but I totally get what you’re sayin. I sat outside all day on Sat at the Providence Open market. It was freezing. I was wrapped in a blanket and dealing with not selling a damn thing due to little foot traffic since it was so cold, but I gt to sit…all day with no one wanting me for anything. :o )

I hate the days I carpool with my husband (and we drop the kids off together). My morning commute is the only time of my day that I have to myself!

Even when I get a pedicure – my 2-yr old must come with me (but that is pretty stinking cute…).

Book your massage re-do soon!

Oh i LOVE being alone in the van. I put on my Prince and blare it and sing along to all the dirty words and sexual themes.

Sorry you missed your massage, though :( I’m glad it wasn’t an emergency…..wait. It probably totally was.

Oh… I’m sorry you missed your full massage… and that you were stuck in that traffic… but like you said… you were alone and had peace and quiet in you car, so that’s something, right? And you had a nice facial and time spent with your friend… so yay for that!

I LOVEEEEEEEEE being alone in my car. And I think that because you were late, it means you need a “do over”!

Glad it was so nice for you!

Positive turn of events. I always loved driving around when I needed a moment to myself, but alas the subways offer no privacy for self contemplation and relaxation. I look at the parents in awe who have no car to chill out in as they commute to and from work, back and forth to school with their kiddies.

Schedule a massage and another facial? I so would!

I love traffic, as long as I don’t have to be somewhere at a certain time! I’ve always loved it, even in college. It’s time to myself where I can listen to music!

Man, it’s been a while since I listened to some music…

I find car drives to be really relaxing and help me unwind and de-stress. Although if I had a full bladder, my stress level would increase!

Sounds like you made the best of it. I’ll take any moment alone without the kids because those moments are….NEVER.

Garbage needs emptying? I’ll take it out!
Oil needs changing in the car? I’ll do it!
Yes, I’ve scheduled gynecologist, dentist and hair removal appointments. Again. See you later!

Driving in the car alone without my husband or 3 1/2 year old is a vacation all on its own. I can turn up the tunes that I pick for a change and enjoy the privacy which I never seem to get anymore. Bad news, you missed the massage, good news, now you have an excuse to reschedule!
