My hair color obsession started early. I was probably a pre-teen when I first discovered Colorific Styling mousse. My dad emphatically refused to buy it for me. On a mall trip with friends, I bought some. Copper something or other. My parents went out for a few hours and I got to work. I didn’t really think it did anything. When my parents came home, I enthusiastically greeted them at the door as if nothing was new.
“Uhh…L…why do you look like a carrot?” said my Dad.
Whatever do you mean? It promised natural results.
It took me a few days of washing with dish soap to get it out. A few school days. I didn’t learn my lesson.
Before entering Junior High School – when looking cool mattered – I made, quite possibly, my worst hair coloring mistake. Sun-In. Does this work on anyone? I have yet to meet the person who can use it without turning orange. Guess what it did to my brown hair? You guessed right. Before school started, I went to get my hair cut, and my poor hair dresser almost had a stroke. She had absolutely no idea what to do with me. A hideous short hair cut later and I was ready to make my Junior high debut. Needless to say, the beginning of 7th grade wasn’t fun. To this day, I wonder why no one thought to slap some brown color on to fix the mess? But I guess a super-cool mullet seemed like a better choice.
I was born blond. I spent much of my childhood with very light hair. I’m not blond anymore. Over the years, Mother Nature has decided to darken my hair faster than I can keep up. I used to color for fun. I’ve been light brown, dark brown, red, highlighted, lowlighted, etc. Now I color for necessity. Once I think I’ve found the right shade, I start to see darker roots. Is there a shade darker than black? That’s me.
This weekend, I went to get a much needed cut and color. I asked my stylist to match my roots. I’m tired of roots. She informed me, while pointing to her own jet black hair, that it would be the same color as hers. I love black hair. I so wish I could pull it off. My palest of pale Irish skin and almost nonexistent eyebrows make it a pretty bad look. So, instead, I asked her to make it light brown. The same color as when I was a kid.
I refuse to go dark. I prefer to look as if I have eyebrows.

I tried sun in with the same horrible results. I’ve “dyed” my hair with purple kool-aid. I tried those “temporary” dyes, I think they were called Glints or something, in copper. I loved it and of course it got discontinued (like everything I love…don’t even get me started on the Chilito from Taco Bell). I tried auburn once and it washed my skin out so badly that from then on out I stuck to highlights. I have always wanted to go blonde…just once, but I am too lazy to deal with the upkeep of that!

Sun-In never worked! You should post a picture of your new hair colour! I’m sure it looks great.
OMG- I too remember “Sun-in”- Bad, bad, bad results! You sure brought a smile to my face.

I did the sun-in thing too when I was yournger. Dark brown faded to carrot orange. Yuck. Funny thing though, I had gone on a job interview with Sun-In orange, got hired and then decided I needed to look more professional. Went backt o dark brown.
First day on this new job and the man that hired me said “II could have sworn you were a blonde”. (Ooops)

I hate roots too! I’m phasing back to my natural color. I have light brown hair and last winter I went really dark brown and my stylist had to dye my eyebrows to match my hair because they were too blonde!
One thing I never did was color my hair. I’ve made many other fashion blunders and have beautified myself unnecessarily in other ways but not with hair color. So many days I look at my tired, wan, pale face and think “maybe highlights will do the trick!” and I back away (mostly because I’m cheap). I think I’ll say dark brunette until I go gray and then maybe I’ll hit the foils! Or maybe sun-in!

Sun-In was a common mistake for my friends when I was young. I never did it because I have dark brown hair and I figured it would orange me up. But then again, it oranged everyone!

I’ve always loved coloring my hair too. It began in highschool. I would color my hair often and often different shades / colors. Now I am not so good at it. i love having my niece in cosmetology school though. She highlighted my hair about a month ago and then put some color on it for Thanksgiving. It’s addicting.
