Daylight Savings Time, you have really let me down

by LZ on November 2, 2009

When I was a child, as expected, I did not love turning the clocks back. I had to come in earlier. Mom made me got to bed sooner. No fun, at all, for a child. When playing outside stopped being important to me, I started to truly appreciate it.

Turning the clocks back meant the holidays were coming! Sometimes we did it before Halloween…if not, it certainly reminded me that Thanksgiving was on the way, that Fall was in full swing, and that Christmas would be here before I knew it. I loved when I worked in Boston, and left my office at night. The dark, the Christmas lights that came on so early, the holiday buzz. Moving out to the burbs, I still got the same feeling, but got to add in the smell of chimneys or burning leaves. Being inside in the dark, cold Autumn just feels cozy to me. I wouldn’t trade that for an hour of daylight at a time when I wouldn’t normally be doing anything outdoors.

Having kids, moving the clocks forward or back is always a potential issue. Luckily, my girls have adjusted pretty well. They went to bed extra late on Halloween night and still woke up after 8am on Sunday. Went to bed early last night and woke up at 7am today. I think we’re on track and back to normal already.

So where’s the problem? The problem is me. I have been looking forward to the time change for weeks. I am not a morning person. I had such high hopes that I would wake up earlier, on my own, and start the day a little brighter. It is not the case. M woke me up today at 7:00, which should be fine, but it’s not. I didn’t feel like it was 8:00. I just felt like it was too early, as usual. What happened to 7 feeling like 8? Shouldn’t I be ready to rise sooner? Come on! This was my one chance per year to get on track, to get up before I’m a lunatic running around to get us all out the door for school. I think I blew it, but I prefer to blame Ben Franklin and his bright ideas.

The clock change is kicking our butt! Yesterday was the longest day ever, seriously. Bewteen Halloween sugar highs and waiting for nighttime was rather tortorous. My baby girl didn’t nap this AM, so I just attempted again now. Our internal clock is all screwed up, thanks to daylight savings. Great.

Is AZ the only continental US state that doesn’t change? Must be nice.

Same here in the Spring. I’m late for everything and can’t get out of bed on time. As if I have serious jet lag, but no good vacation to show for it.

Nate didn’t get the memo about sleeping in at all. He woke up at 6:15 on Sunday! Butthead! He woke up at 6:30 today. He’s lucky I have to work or I’d be more irritated. Next week when I’m off work it is not going to be pleasant!

I didn’t get the memo either. Totally forgot and didn’t change the clocks before going to bed. Woke my son up for his football game on time which was actually an hour early. Sorry big guy. Sunday was a long day because of it and I had to hit the hay, same time as the kids. Oh well, I prefer Day Light Savings Time. Hate it when it gets dark by 4:30 up here in Edmonton, Canada.

I totally screwed it up too. And tonight when I was making dinner and it turned dark, it freaked me out a little bit. I feel like I need to stop doing anything when it’s dark. I’m so lazy!

You are a very lucky woman. I’m jealous.

My youngest was up at 4am. Enough said.

I’ve hardly noticed any difference either. I think we’re all on track here too. I was up this morning at 7, instead of 8, but felt just as exhausted as usual.

We are so on different pages on this. Sleeping until 8? Huh? Can you please come over here and train MY daughter to sleep past 6? What I wouldn’t do to sleep in. I have quite enough of being productive from 6:00 am on!
