It’s, like, wicked annoying

I can’t take it. My almost 5 year old has started talking like a valley girl. She’s 5! This girl has a better vocabulary than I do, but somehow, it just doesn’t sound right to hear her say, “Actually, like, fantasy means a dream. Do you, like, know what I mean?” No, I don’t know what you mean. I didn’t hear a word of it, except ‘like.’ We need to do something about that.

I said, “M, instead of saying, “The dog, was, like, ‘Woof,’ how about saying, “The dog said woof”?

“No, Mom, the dog was, like, ‘woof.’ Dogs can’t SAY anything.” Touche.

She was with her cousins, same age, recently, and I swear they had an entire conversation without actually using words, other than ‘like.’

“I was, like, uh-oh” “I bet you were, like, wow!” “Like, yeah. And I bet you’d be, like, cool!” They didn’t seem lost. I certainly was.

How about the little Boston accent she is developing? It’s cute and terrifying at the same time. She is always asking to play with her stickahs. Yes, that’s stickers to those of you who speak properly. I am from this area. I grew up 9 miles from where I live now. I had the accent…I lost it. On purpose. I went to school in Western, MA, and thankfully learned that ‘R’ is, in fact, an actual part of the alphabet. Joe is from New York. He, too, sees the value in R. Our daughter? Not a fan of R.

I am just so glad that none of our names can be Bostonized. It’s bad enough that we have to get to the ‘cah’ every day to drive to school. M is starting to teach Abs to say more words. I only hope that “Mo’ juice” is simply because she can’t say ‘more,’ and not because she refuses to.

I laugh, too. It’s impossible not to, especially when she wants to color her stickah pages with mahhkiz. That’s markers to the lay person ;-)

Stickahs. That’s funny! She going to sound like one strange kid. Boston meets the Valley.

My husband grew up in Queens and he somehow managed to avoid speaking like Vinnie Babarino.

I adore accents! I think they’re so much fun to try to imitate. I can’t do any of them, but I LOVE trying. I used to have a mean jersey accent when I lived out there, but I lost it when I moved back to the midwest.

Hopefully it’s just a phase. I think all girls go through the “like” thing at some point, and then drop it once they hear themselves.

I’ve got the opposite situation, where my 2 y/o–who has lived near Boston since birth–will correct people who call him “Gunnah” or comment on his saggy “diapah.”

I kno what you mean about the Boston accent and using “like”. I was born in Boston, but was not raised there. I absolutely detest the absence of “r” in their vocabualry!!! It sounds so harsh to me. As for “like”, I have a friend that uses it about 100 times in one short conversation. Lately, I have been able to tune it out. At least your daughter isn’t using the word, “bitchin”. Good luck!!!

I have a bit of the vally girl in me, but mine is legit! I lived in the SanFernando Valley (home of valley girl speak) for 6 years. I try to remove like from my vocab and, when necessary, can edit it out. But when I get talking fast it comes out full force! I refuse to let my kids develop the RI accent. I will correct them until I am blue in the face!

I think it is, like, hilarious! Just wait 8 more years – think of how many “likes” she’ll utter in that time period! Have fun!
