How is it possible to not have a junk drawer? Does anyone really have a place for everything they own?
I bought an organizing book. I’m a pack rat, a clutter hound. I need the step by step instructions for throwing away everyday trash. The author yelled at me. She told me that if there isn’t a place for it, you should toss it. A pile on the counter, a spare drawer – not the proper place to keep anything.
I have 2 junk drawers. One in the living room and one in our bedroom. Where else can I put my old lipsticks, sparkly body powder that I thought was such a great idea for my wedding, old glasses with no lenses, expired teeth whitening strips and old, cheesy, tarnished costume jewelry? I’m expected to throw these things out?
In the living room, the ‘junk’ drawer is much more useful. Small parts of M’s toys that need to stay out of Abs’ hands…and mouth, envelopes, pens, menus, a tape measure to record my exercise progress (ha!), stickers that don’t stick, old remotes to TVs that we no longer own, and a 2008 calendar.
And piles? Piles are great! My mail is organized on the kitchen counter. I always know where to find my bills. I know where all my magazines are. Piles are Joe’s biggest pet peeve. I don’t see the problem. Look at the counter, you’ll find what you need. Ask me to set up a filing system or a proper ‘place’ for things? We’ll never find them. My system works.

I’ve “lost” paperwork before, by putting it in the filing cabinet.

Exactly! Who would think to look in the right place for something? Not me!
Organiziztion is completely overrated! I also do piles of mail. It may be in a pile, but I know it is all on the desk. If I tried to sort the stuff, I’d probably forget about it!

Oh, I can so relate to those junk drawers. Some around here are so full of “junk” I’m afraid to open them for fear of not getting them closed again. Piles of mail you say? No kidding! Everything in a nice unorganized stack on the table! I hear ya!

I think I have four or five junk drawers! lol. But this reminds me of a story my sister told me. Her son was talking to his teacher about something or other and the teacher made a reference to “your mom’s junk drawer” and he looked at her like “What? What’s that”? The teacher was like, you know, the drawer with scissors and random things? ” He really had no idea what she meant. haha. I think my sister could have written that book. She is the queen of organized. Her “junk” drawer (aka, the one with scissors, pens, rubber bands) is neatly organized with little drawer dividers and only NEW and in good condition items. The throughs out immediately anything not shiny and new. I have a problem with that! I might be persuaded to through out old pens that don’t work anymore (maybe) but if there is still 1/4 inch of stubb on that pencil it’s a keeper! lol
Oh, sorry for my bad spelling..I meant “throw out” of course! Yikes! Do I proofread much?
