Every so often, I stop to think about how lucky I am to have a big family. A big, local family. I am the oldest of almost 30 1st cousins (the youngest is 12), I have 10 aunts and uncles (I have an Uncle who is a year older than me!), and many more great-aunts, great-uncles, 2nd cousins, etc. I still have grandparents.
One thing that I never realized, is how rare it is to have a great-grandfather.
My Jaju is 97 years old. He is my Dad’s grandfather…my grandmother’s father. My daughters’ great-great-grandfather. Up until very recently, he was still driving his own car (not saying it’s a great idea, but pretty noteworthy!) and he took care of himself at home. He had a fall recently, and broke his hip. They were worried about his health and age when they operated, but he came out kicking…but it reminded me that he’s getting old. I just never really saw it before now.
I love seeing him at family functions, with his red (or sometimes green), fancy-schmancy suit and his string tie. His standard uniform. Some say he looks like Colonel Sanders. I don’t disagree.
My great-grandmother died years ago, but I didn’t really know her. He had a companion, Mary, who became part of our family, but sadly, she died a few years ago, too.
I found this photo from 5 years ago. 5 generations of my family in one picture. A photo I feel so lucky to have. It’s my daughter, me, my father, his mother and her father (with his ‘friend’ Mary.)

Ah wow that picture is amazing. I have a similar one from many years ago and sadly alot of my grandparents passed on. Now I have my 1 year old son I am fortunate enough to have introduced him to my partners grandparents and my great-aunts and uncles.
Treasure these times and memories.
Best Wishes
xx
We also have a pic of my husband with his two grandmothers, significant at that time because one lived in france(where his family is from), significant now because both ladies have passed on, I cherish that photo!

That’s amazing!! More reason to stay here!
That is amazing to be an adult and have your great grandparent still living! We take these things for granted, but I, myself, am down to 1 grandparent and my mother is passed away too. I love my family and hate that I live on the opposite side of the country from them.

Fantastic photo! I’ve got just my 92-year-old Grandpa left, and he promises (daily) to haunt my dad (and anyone else he finds to be a nuisance) when he’s gone. Love him!

That is so wonderful. My grandmother is 96 so “someone” in your family got busy early huh? I love how my kids are getting to know two of their great grandparents (both my grandmas are still alive). They will cherish those memories and I think it gives our grandparents and in your great grandfather a fantastic reason to live!

I also have loads of relatives….so many first cousins it would take me awhile to count, ten sets of aunts and uncles, etc. I used to have all four grandparents alive and just last year, I lost the last one, my grand father. He was very special.
Anyway, it is so great you appreciate your family, especially the older generation, because it seems like time slips so quickly and suddenly they are no longer here.
Geez, I made a happy post sad, sorry about that.
