Before you ask, let me tell you…

About my scar.

Imagine, you’re a 16 year old girl. It’s the week you get your driver’s license and the week of your junior prom. To a high school girl, it’s probably the most exciting week to date.

Now, how about taking that license photo with a chin full of stitches, and taking your prom picture with a fat lip. I did.

Mind you, it could have been much worse, but when you’re 16 and barely have a care in the world, it’s a BIG deal. It’s not actually that noticeable, unless you’re very close to me, but I’ve been asked about it. My daughter points out the ‘white line’ on my face quite a bit. Such an ego boost.

Here’s what happened:

I was sleeping. I had to get up to pee, but got up much too quickly. By the tme I reached the bathroom, I was so dizzy that I fell forward, flat on my face. All I wanted to do was get up, pee and go back to bed. My Dad came in to see if I was ok, and told my Mom to get me some ice and a cloth.

“I’m fine…I just want to pee and go back to sleep.”

“L, you have a hole in your chin. I need to take you to the hospital.”

Crap.

So, we went to the hospital, and I did, in fact, have a hole in my chin. I bit right through. I was lucky I didn’t knock out a tooth, break my nose, etc. The nurse in the ER was my Science teacher’s wife. The doctor warned me that the cut was in such a place that, when it healed, could leave me with a curled lip. Like Sylvester Stallone.

Like Sylvester Stallone. That is NOT a good look on a 16 year old girl. Or boy. Or Sylvester Stallone (Yo, Adrian!)

So, I got my stitches. I went home. I woke up the next day with my bottom lip swollen almost to the point of touching my nose. I stayed home from school that day. The week went by, and my face went from puffy and distorted to slightly less puffy and very bruised. By Thursday, I took the bandage off to smile, as best as I could, for my driver’s license picture. The next day, I put on my dress and went to my prom, looking like I was in a street fight. I dripped soda on my dress. Through the hole in my chin.

True story.

{if you’re wondering if my lip looks like Sly Stallone…it doesn’t. I dodged a serious bullet there}

I busted my chin open once too but I was lucky that I didn’t need stitches since it was a small cut. I fell running on a slippery floor….and its good to hear that you don’t have a Stallone lip ;)

Sadly, this was the second round of stitches in my chin/lip. The first, I was roller skating on my stairs (yes…I know…) and fell and hit my mouth on the railing. Just 1 stitch there…right in the middle, can barely see it.

Do you still have those pictures? Visiting from Mama Kat’s. I have a scar on my chin from falling while playing in the rain but I was young so it didn’t make such a lasting impression as yours did. Though it is a great family story to be told to grandchildren and such when they get hurt.

I have my license somewhere…but doubt I have the prom picture. Simply because I don’t want to remember the hideous fuchsia dress and huge hair!

Oh my gosh. I can imagine that would be devastating to a teenager! Did it all heal nicely?

Oh, ow ow ow ! That makes my chin hurt just reading about it. I’m glad you dodged the Sly look though..no one should be cursed with that! :) Great story. I choose that prompt as well.

As a little kid I would run everywhere & always fell while biting my lip. Yep, always bit right through. I’ve got quite the set of white scars on my bottom lip too. Glad you dodged the Sly bullet! And I was totally cringing/giggling while reading this. Loved it!

That is a truly wonderful, awful story. I must admit, my favorite part was when you dribbled soda on your dress through the hole in your chin. That was very satisfying and graphic.

I also busted open my chin when I was 8. Still have the scar. But the difference was that at EIGHT, you’re so psyched to go to school to show off your enormous Boo Boo. It was like a war wound for me.

I’m glad you healed nicely and it’s just a good story to tell now!

OMG what a terrible experience! Very funny. I avoided my prom I just couldn’t face it. Which makes me a chicken.

I have to admit–I also laughed while reading this. I was quite a tomboy as a kid and always led guided adventures (which usually resulted in hospital visits). So I can totally relate. Thanks so much for sharing your story :)

I never had stitches – until childbirth #1 and #2. However, I very much enjoyed your story – I may have laughed, but in sympathy only.

So glad the Stallone thing didn’t happen.

It seems we all have a chin cracking story. Mine is not G rated so I will not share it. If it makes you feel any better, I never noticed you had a scar!

Oh my goodness. I almost cried when I read this. Poor poor you. and 16! It’s weird how many people out there have made their own hole in their chins! I’ve done it as well. I have a very very small scar and the plus side to it… it made my bottom lip bigger, like in a hot momma way :)
