My oldest talks about death a lot lately. Much to my dismay. It’s a subject I have never been able to discuss comfortably, and I dreaded the day one of my kids would start asking questions.
It all started with the frog. Then she forgot about the topic for a while. Now, for some reason, she is asking again. Over the weekend, we were chatting, and she asked again about froggy Heaven: “What kinds of things do they have there?” “Who feeds the frogs?”
Then more…
“Do all things die?” Crap. “Yes, M. All living things will die eventually.” “Why?” “Because they get old, or they get sick or things just stop working.”
Please…no more questions…no more questions…
“What about the cats? Will they die?” “Yes, M. Someday, our cats will die.” “Will they go to kitty Heaven?” Not these shithead cats. “Yes, M. They will go to kitty Heaven.” She went on: dogs, her backpack, the TV, the Laurie Berkner band – do they die? And then…oh shit. I could see the gears working.
“Do people die?”
“Yes, M. People die.”
“But, how do you flush them down the toilet?”
Thank God my 5 year old brought some levity to the conversation and ended it herself.
“Will our clouds be near our cats’ and frogs’ clouds?”
I truly hope not.

Oh dear, that conversation was both mortifying and hilarious at the same time (I have this image of trying to flush someone down the toilet…) I dread the day I have to talk about this too…

I think your daughter may be on to something. Flushing the dead may be the wave of the future since our cemeteries are so overcrowded.
Shithead cats go to kitty hell. They must endure a giant overflowing poop filled litter box for all of eternity.

My cat will be with yours, somewhere in cats who puke everywhere hell! That’s a hard conversation to have, but at least it didn’t get too heavy. Hopefully she doesn’t try to flush Abs down the toilet!
